Rhizome

Rhizome, affiliated with the New Museum, is an online gallery/database/community for art that deals with technology. So far, it is the most comprehensive (it was started in 1996) and the most intriguing critical site dealing with this subject, from rhizome.org:
Rhizome is dedicated to the creation, presentation, preservation, and critique of emerging artistic practices that engage technology.
Check the blog for new developments in the realms of technology/web/digital art, view the online-only exhibitions, and utilize their daily Artbase additions to familiarize yourself with one of the most important art initiatives/movement of our generation.

Constant Dullaart

Constant Dullaart is based out of the Netherlands.  Of course, like most net artists, I cannot find any information about him.  He created the well-known Stabilized Earthquake video, and was the curator for the recent Club Internet show.  I feel late on the net art movement, but nonetheless it is incredibly pertinent to the future of art, new media, and the internet.  Also the activity within these communities such as, Supercentral, should be discussed and investigated as it looks to me like the future of web, (interactivity, new modes of visual communication, social interaction, etc.) exists within these groups.  Please go check it all out.

Olivier Richon

Discovered him on the website of London based gallery IBID. Olivier Richon seems to take note from Jan Fyt and other 17th century Dutch still life painters in his photography. Combining similar elements à la the use of dogs and titles like 'The Hunt' he connects these analogous qualities to modern themes and ideas in a very controlled manner. There is also a very simplistic style the Lausanne native promotes throughout his work, impressive in itself the style gives off a feeling of deep meaning through its ambiguity. Knowing he received a Masters of Philosophy by thesis and project sort of makes sense of all this, it also admits to why he seems to borrow from past Dutch masters to tackle today's socially impounded ideas through the use of objects.

flatflat.org Peter Segerstrom

taken from flatflat.org, the website of Peter Segerstrom:

flatflat is a collection of handmade audio files, jpgs, gifs, and texts. flatflat is the digital igloo of Peter Segerstrom.

If you have questions, would like a back rub, want to talk about max/msp, want somedesign or programming done, need music for your documentary on Laverne and Shirley, or just want to rap, write me at:

peter@flatflat.org

I can't find a solid explanation as to what exactly is going on, but this is one of the most fantastic personal websites I have come across in a while.  Some graphic design, print and web, net art, and fantastic music; Peter's musical project Portable Sunsets was featured with Tehn in a Dublab (one of our favorites) podcast a while back.  Check out the site.

The above boxes were actually a sound installation.

Aurel Schmidt

A very honest individual and quite the amazing artist. She reminds me of the mid-90's Chloë Sevigny.

Excerpt from the Fecal Face interview and a quote that explains why I love this girl so much..

Living in hell and coming out the other side, a better person, subsequently an older person. Honestly though I am so thankful to be getting older. Fuck being a kid, at least as an adult you fully understand free will.

+On a side note check out one of Vice's earliest ART TALK! eps with Richard Prince. The entrepreneurial artist takes the VBS crew through a 'little town' he created for himself and his artwork in Rensselaerville, New York.

Viesta Bag

I stumbled across this flickr belonging to a young artist living in NY. What I found so fascinating about her was that she created a product totally based on 'true inspirational value'.. naming it the 'Viesta' Bag. The fact that she recognized the true meaning behind her design after it was made shows that it holds a unique characteristic. Demonstrating how good design just makes sense to human logic. Therefore, the finished product's driven idea (original, having never been done before) is realized as a being something natural to the human mind. The description below explains how organically the idea came together.

"When I walk down the street, I usually see a lot of garbage. It sometimes is furniture, clothes, and toys, which are useful and sometimes even seem brand new! Why do we have so much to waste? Do all these usable things have to go into the trashcans?
I looked at my closet, and there were so many clothes, that I do not wear anymore. I thought of throwing them away, but I could not. They were a kind of journal for me. When I looked at my clothes, I remember my experience I had, while I was wearing them. Therefore, I decided to make something new from what I had.
I had a vest from my art teacher, who gave it to me because he had two of the same. He did not wear one of them, so he gave it to me. He thought I would wear it so it would be used. However, I did not have many chances to wear it. I also had wool threads, which were left over from my art class project. I imagined these two could be combined to make a bag out of the vest. I sew them together. Now, the bag totally looks like a folded vest, which has a humor. In this way, the vest was reborn as something that I could use again a different form.
When I was making it, my concern was not seriously thinking about the environment. I just wanted to not throw my clothes out and not lose my memories. It simply became giving the idea about helping the environment. I believe helping making better environment is not something that we have to study long time before we practice. It is not difficult. How to make the planet greener would be by changing small things that does not require too much effort in our daily life. It would be recycling just like my bag, using double side paper, unplugging appliances when they are not used, or using rechargeable batteries. I hope everyone tries little by little for healthier planet."

Takeshi Masada "New Paintings"

Osaka born contemporary artist Takeshi Masada is currently showing a solo exhibition simply titled "New Paintings". I discovered him while looking at Jean Touitou's blog on Honeyee. I'm really taken by the affects he uses with oil and water based paints. Takeshi Masada's new works are currently being displayed at Wako Works of Art located in the Shinjuku district of Tokyo.
